In the past weeks and months we were hard at work in Open Knowledge to prepare the biggest open data and open knowledge festival and community gathering of the year: Open Knowledge Festival 2014. Last week this went down in Berlin's Kulturbrauerei where over 1,000 people from over 50 countries converged to discuss the future of knowledge sharing and technology. As International Community Manager I've been involved in the preparation and executing of a series of things:
- The Open Knowledge Community Summit, a fringe event where community members from over 25 countries came together the day before the festival to discuss new opportunities and challenges in this rapidly growing global network. Here's a write up from the event that I did to try to summarize some of the many exciting ideas that were discussed.
- Open Design Definition Workshop, organized with Peter Troxler and Sanna Marttila, both from the Open Design & Hardware Working Group, which I voluntarily co-organize. The session brought approximately 25 people together to finalize the definition via great facilitation from Peter, who has been leading the process together with Massimo EFTERNAVN (who unfortunately could not make it to Berlin). Here's my write-up of that session.
- Informal meetup for the nordic Open Knowledge community: Miska Knapek, one of my colleagues in this community, was the mastermind behind this gathering, where we had over 30 people gathered from Finland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Iceland. More info on that in the Danish write-up link below.
I also did a write-up of the entire festival in Danish for the Open Knowledge Denmark blog. Parts of this was translated into Swedish by Open Knowledge Sweden Local Group for their blog.
All in all Open Knowledge Festival was a great affirmation that open data and open knowledge communities around the world are growing at exponential rate.
